The Batman #428 in context

Why collectors care

The issue in which Jason Todd, the second Robin, dies -- cover-dated December 1988. The outcome was decided by readers through a 900-number telephone poll, a genuinely unprecedented event in mainstream comics, and it reshaped Batman's character for decades.

How to identify it

Batman #428, December 1988, part of "A Death in the Family." Two versions of the issue were prepared depending on the poll result, and the narrow majority voted for Jason to die; the published book is the version in which he does. A later "Robin Lives!" edition reprints the unpublished alternative and is a different book.

Common mistakes

Confusing the modern "Robin Lives!" printing with the 1988 original. Confirm the cover date and the indicia.

Grade considerations

A late-80s book with decent high-grade survival, so value sits at CGC 9.8. Centering and spine ticks are the usual limiters.
