The Ghost Rider #1 in context

Why collectors care

The first issue of Ghost Rider's own series, cover-dated September 1973, following his debut in Marvel Spotlight #5. Johnny Blaze became one of Marvel's most recognizable 1970s creations.

How to identify it

Ghost Rider #1 (1973 series), September 1973. This is NOT the character's first appearance: that is Marvel Spotlight #5 (1972). Marvel has also published several later Ghost Rider volumes with their own #1s.

Common mistakes

Paying first-appearance money for a first-solo-series book, and confusing the 1973 volume with the 1990 Danny Ketch relaunch, which is a common and inexpensive book.

Grade considerations

A 1973 book with a bright, flame-heavy cover that shows edge wear clearly. High grade with white pages is the premium tier.
