The Incredible Hulk #271 in context
Why collectors care
Rocket Raccoon's first appearance in Marvel continuity, cover-dated May 1982, in a story titled "Now Somewhere In the Black Holes of Sirius Major There Lived a Young Boy Named Rocket Raccoon." It is also his first cover appearance, and the book the market treats as his key.
How to identify it
Incredible Hulk #271, May 1982. This is NOT the character's outright debut: Rocket first appeared in Marvel Preview #7 (Summer 1976), in the back-up feature "Prince Wayfinder: The Sword in the Star," where he was called "Rocky." Hulk #271 is where he becomes Rocket Raccoon proper and enters continuity.
Common mistakes
The two books are both marketed as "1st Rocket Raccoon" and they are not the same thing. Decide which claim you want -- the 1976 magazine debut or the 1982 continuity appearance -- and confirm it before buying.
Grade considerations
An early-80s newsstand book that was not saved in quantity before the character became famous. Spine stress and cover gloss are the usual limiters; high-grade copies are scarcer than the date suggests.
