The Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in context
Why collectors care
The first appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy, cover-dated January 1969, written by Arnold Drake and penciled by Gene Colan. The book appeared in a title that was otherwise mostly a reprint vehicle, which kept its print profile low.
How to identify it
Marvel Super-Heroes #18, January 1969. This is the ORIGINAL 1969 Guardians line-up -- Vance Astro, Yondu, Charlie-27, and Martinex -- not the Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot team from the films, which formed in 2008.
Common mistakes
The single biggest trap on this book: buyers expecting the movie team. If you want the modern line-up's origin, this is not that book. Confirm which Guardians you are buying before paying a first-appearance premium.
Grade considerations
A late-60s book from a low-attention title, so surviving high-grade copies are uncommon. The white-heavy cover shows soiling and edge wear, which suppresses the top of the grade range.
