The Star Wars #1 in context
Why collectors care
Marvel's Star Wars #1, cover-dated July 1977, adapting the first film. It went on sale April 12, 1977 -- more than a month BEFORE the film opened on May 25 -- so it introduced the story to American readers ahead of the movie itself.
How to identify it
Star Wars #1 (1977), issues #1-6 adapting the film, adapted by Roy Thomas with art by Howard Chaykin. Two cover prices exist: the standard 30-cent edition and a much scarcer 35-cent test-market price variant. Later printings carry a "reprint" marker on the cover.
Common mistakes
The 30-cent and 35-cent variants are worth very different amounts, and reprints are extremely common on this book. Check the price box and the cover for a reprint marker before paying first-print money.
Grade considerations
Enormous print run, so raw copies are everywhere and the value concentrates almost entirely in high grade and in the 35-cent variant. Spine stress and staple tears are the usual limiters.
