The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 in context
Why collectors care
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (1984, Mirage) is the first appearance of the Turtles and the most important independent comic key of the 1980s. Its tiny first-print run makes it a genuine rarity.
How to identify it
The first printing has no printing designation, gives a Dover, New Hampshire address, carries a full-page Gobbledygook #1 ad on the inside back cover, and reads "NAGI'S" in the first word balloon on page 15. Only about 3,000 first-print copies exist; second (about 6,000) and third (about 35,000) printings state their printing inside.
Common mistakes
Later printings and counterfeits are frequently sold as the first printing. Use the interior tells above, not the seller title, and buy graded for high-value copies.
Grade considerations
With so few first-print copies, high-grade examples are exceptionally scarce and command large premiums. Spine stress and cover wear are the usual grade-limiters.
