Reading PSA Pop Reports for Pokémon
PSA publishes population data for every graded card. Learn to read it, calculate true scarcity at PSA 10, and predict price moves before the market sees them.
Why It Matters: Pop reports are the closest thing to a public order book in graded Pokémon. A card with 200 PSA 10s and growing demand will outperform a card with 4,000 PSA 10s and the same demand, every time.
What's in the Report
Search any card at psacard.com/pop. You get:
- Total Pop — every example PSA has ever graded, across all grades
- Grade distribution — how many at each grade (1-10, including half-points and qualifier grades)
- Pop higher — count of copies in grades above the one you're looking at
- Recent submissions — last 30/60/90 day grading volume
The Three Numbers That Move Prices
1. PSA 10 Pop (Gem Mint Scarcity)
The headline. A 1st Edition Charizard PSA 10 pop ~2,200 sounds large, but each new submission has 8-12% hit rate so growth is slow. Compare to modern Moonbreon at ~990 with 30-40% hit rate growing fast.
2. Pop Higher (the "ceiling")
For a PSA 9, "pop higher" tells you how many 10s exist. Low pop higher = your 9 is closer to the top. PSA 9 with 50 cards above it is more valuable than the same card's PSA 9 with 5,000 cards above it.
3. Monthly Submission Rate
If a card's pop grew 8% in the last quarter, expect price pressure as supply expands. Stable pop = price-supportive. Spiking pop = sell signal.

Pop Tricks the Market Misses
- Half-grade scarcity: PSA 9.5 (where it exists) often has very low pop. PSA 9 + PSA 10 combined may dwarf the 9.5 supply.
- Qualifier grades: A PSA 10 OC (off-center) or PSA 9 MK (mark) is usually 30-60% off straight grade. Some collectors target these for arbitrage.
- First print runs: 1st Edition + Shadowless pops are tracked separately from Unlimited. The premium can be 8-12x.
