Why collectors care

Evolutions (2016) reprinted the original Base Set artwork for the TCG's 20th anniversary, and its Charizard is the most affordable route to the classic Mike Kraft illustration in a modern, well-centered print run. It is the card collectors buy when the 1999 original is out of reach.

How to identify it

Number 11/108 from Evolutions. The artwork matches the 1999 Base Set Charizard, but the card number, set symbol and modern card frame make it unmistakable on inspection. The 1999 original is 4/102.

Common mistakes

Evolutions cards are occasionally passed off as vintage in photos cropped to the art. Look at the card number and the modern blue-bordered frame, not the illustration.

Grade considerations

Modern print quality means high grades are far more attainable than on the 1999 card, so value concentrates almost entirely in PSA 10. Centering is the usual limiter.
