Why collectors care

The first Superman solo title, cover-dated Summer 1939 -- the first comic book devoted to a single superhero, published barely a year after the character debuted. It is one of the most historically significant books in the medium.

How to identify it

Superman #1, Summer 1939. This is NOT Superman's first appearance, which is Action Comics #1 (1938), also in this catalog. It reprints his origin from Action Comics #1 with additional pages.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with Action Comics #1. Both are enormously valuable but they are different books with different markets. Restoration is also widespread at this level.

Grade considerations

At Golden Age scarcity the practical questions are authenticity, restoration status, and page quality rather than grade tier. Only certified copies should be considered.
