X-Men #266, August 1990. There is a genuine complication: Uncanny X-Men Annual #14 (July 1990) contains a Gambit appearance and was published three weeks early by mistake, ahead of #266. The Annual is therefore the first PUBLISHED appearance, while #266 is the first in-story appearance and the more valuable book.
