One Sale Is Not a Market: Reading Grade Medians in Our October 2026 Comps
Nearly three in four grade buckets on this site hold a single eBay sale. Here is what that means for every "what it sells for" number you read, with the receipts behind each one.
The Sample: the sold-comp bake behind every item page, frozen for this post. It holds 2,703 graded eBay sales across 478 items, sold between Jun 26, 2026 and Oct 2, 2026 (2,332 of them in September). Each item keeps up to its six most recent matching graded sales. Every price below is a recorded sale, shown with its date.

Up to six sales per item sounds like a lot until they split across grades. The median item spreads its sales across four grade buckets, so most buckets are one sale wide. A one-sale "median" is just that sale, and it carries no information about whether the price was normal.
What a Market Looks Like
Start with the rare case where one grade carries the whole sample. Every sale below is the same book in the same grade, sold within two days.

Six CGC 9 sales between Oct 1 and Oct 2. The $30 sale fell below a third of the grade median, so the trim rule set it aside. The other 5 landed between $85 and $150, for a median of $135. That is the shape you want: several independent buyers agreeing within a narrow band.
| Grade | Sales | Median | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| CGC 9headline | 5 of 6 | $135 | $85 to $150 |
When the Trim Does the Work
Even six sales in one grade can disagree. When a grade has four or more sales, the site sets aside any sale below a third of that grade's median or above three times it before computing the number you see.

Six CGC 9 sales. Of those, 4 sold between $1,889 and $3,369; $150 on Sep 27 and $195 on Sep 11 were far below that band and set aside. The median of what remains is $2,814.
The rule only says those prices do not fit; it does not say why. Treat both ends of the range with care: one grade can still hide very different copies.
| Grade | Sales | Median | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| CGC 9headline | 4 of 6 | $2,814 | $1,889 to $3,369 |
When One Sale Would Have Headlined
Sort an item's grades by median and take the top one, and a single sale often wins. Since October 16 the headline figure on homepage cards, research hubs and value rankings is the highest median backed by at least two sales instead. These three cards show why.

One PSA 10 sale on Oct 2 closed at $50,000. The headline is PSA 9 at $986, the median of 2 sales from $240 to $1,732.
| Grade | Sales | Median | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSA 10 | 1 | $50,000 | one price |
| PSA 9headline | 2 | $986 | $240 to $1,732 |
| CGC 10 | 1 | $599 | one price |
| BGS 8.5 | 1 | $380 | one price |
| PSA 8 | 1 | $230 | one price |
None of this says those single sales were fake. Top grades of vintage holos can genuinely sell for many times a mid grade. The point is narrower: one sale cannot tell you whether it was a real high-grade copy, a misread price, a lot or a listing that never paid. Two sales in the same grade at least show the price happened twice. Two is still a floor, not a verdict: Flareon's PSA 9 headline of $986 is the midpoint of a $240 sale and a $1,732 sale, so treat the middle with care.

When No Grade Has Two Sales
For 83 items, every grade is a single sale. The site then sets aside any sale more than ten times the item's typical grade median and headlines the most-traded remaining grade, taking the higher median on a tie. That is a fallback, not a market.
Neo Revelation · 2001
Six sales, six different grades, all within Sep 20 to Sep 23. The single PSA 10 at $50,000 was more than ten times the typical grade median, so it was set aside. The headline falls to the PSA 9 sale at $4,750, which is still one sale. Read an item like this as a list of six data points, not a price.
| Grade | Sales | Median | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSA 10 | 1 | $50,000 | one price |
| PSA 9headline | 1 | $4,750 | one price |
| PSA 8 | 1 | $3,350 | one price |
| CGC 9 | 1 | $2,250 | one price |
| PSA 7 | 1 | $774 | one price |
| PSA 6 | 1 | $490 | one price |
How to Read a Grade Median Yourself
- Check the count first. The grade table on every item page shows how many sales sit behind each median. One sale is an anecdote. Two is a start. Four or more lets the trim rule remove the odd one out.
- Check the dates. Each item keeps at most its six most recent graded sales, and most of this sample sold in September. A median from sales weeks apart says less about today than one from the same few days.
- Look at the spread, not just the middle. A tight range means buyers agreed. A wide range inside one grade means the copies, the listings or the matching may differ.
- Compare neighboring grades. If a lower grade outsells a higher one, or one grade sits far above its neighbors on a single sale, treat both numbers with suspicion.
- Read the receipts. Comp matching runs on listing titles and is not perfect. Each receipt shows when a sale closed and for how much; an odd price in a thin grade is a reason for caution, not a new market level.
