The Strange Tales #110 in context
Why collectors care
The first appearance of Doctor Strange, cover-dated July 1963, created by Steve Ditko with scripting by Stan Lee. Strange arrived as a five-page try-out feature in an anthology title, not as a headliner, which is why so few copies were saved and why the book trails the other 1963 Marvel debuts in surviving supply.
How to identify it
Strange Tales #110, July 1963. The cover is a Human Torch story ("The Human Torch Vs. the Wizard and Paste-Pot Pete!") by Kirby and Ayers -- Doctor Strange is not the cover feature. Buyers expecting a Doctor Strange cover on his own first appearance are often looking at the wrong book. Wong also debuts in this issue.
Common mistakes
Confusing this with Strange Tales #115, which contains the Doctor Strange origin story and is a cheaper, more common book. Also watch for the Golden Age Strange Tales run and later reprints; confirm the 1963 issue and the 12-cent cover price.
Grade considerations
Early-1960s Marvel anthologies were read hard and rarely preserved. Spine stress, corner wear, and off-white-to-tan pages are the norm, so genuinely high-grade copies are scarce and the grade curve is steep above CGC 6.
