The Tales to Astonish #27 in context
Why collectors care
The first appearance of Hank Pym, in the seven-page story "The Man in the Ant Hill" (cover-dated January 1962), by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and Larry Lieber. It predates the entire Marvel superhero line and is the earliest appearance of a character who became a founding Avenger.
How to identify it
Tales to Astonish #27, January 1962. Critically, this is Hank Pym's first appearance but NOT the first appearance of Ant-Man: Pym appears here as a scientist in a science-fiction short, and does not become Ant-Man until Tales to Astonish #35 (September 1962).
Common mistakes
Listings routinely advertise this as "1st Ant-Man," which conflates two separate books and two separate price tiers. If you want the first costumed Ant-Man, you want #35. Confirm which one the listing is actually selling.
Grade considerations
A pre-superhero-era anthology with a small surviving population in high grade. Cover gloss, spine ticks, and Marvel chipping along the edges are the usual limiters.
