PSA vs CGC vs BGS for Pokémon

Which grader to use, and why — by cost, speed, strictness, and resale, for Pokémon specifically.

The verdict: For most Pokémon collectors, PSA is the best grader — the strongest resale premium and broadest recognition. CGC is the value pick, with faster turnaround and lower entry cost. BGS is best for modern cards, where its four sub-grades and Black Label 10 command a premium. Choose by your goal: resale (PSA), value (CGC), or sub-grades on modern chase cards (BGS).

The Three Graders

PSA

Professional Sports Authenticator

The market leader for Pokémon. A PSA 10 almost always commands the highest resale of the three, and buyer recognition is the broadest. The 1–10 scale has no half grades, so the jump from PSA 9 to PSA 10 is large — both in difficulty and in price. Start here if resale is your priority.

CGC

Certified Guaranty Company

The value pick. CGC often has the lowest entry pricing and faster turnaround, and its slabs are well-regarded. Note that CGC uses half grades, and a CGC 10 (Gem Mint) sits a step below the CGC 10 Pristine / "Perfect 10" — roughly, a CGC 10 is comparable to a PSA 9.5-level standard. Recognition is growing but still trails PSA on resale.

BGS

Beckett Grading Services

The sub-grade specialist, favored for modern cards. BGS reports four sub-grades (centering, corners, edges, surface) and the coveted Black Label 10 (a 10 across all four). That granularity is prized on high-grade modern chase cards. Beckett was acquired by Collectors (PSA's parent) in December 2025, which may shape its future positioning.

How to Choose

  • Reselling a key card? PSA — maximum buyer recognition and resale.
  • Grading mid-value cards on a budget? CGC — lower cost, faster turnaround.
  • High-grade modern chase card? BGS — sub-grades and Black Label add value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which grading company is best for Pokémon cards?

For most Pokémon collectors, PSA is the best choice because it has the broadest buyer recognition and the strongest resale premium. CGC is the best value pick with faster turnaround and lower entry cost, and BGS is best for modern cards where its four sub-grades and Black Label 10 carry a premium.

Is a CGC 10 the same as a PSA 10?

Not exactly. CGC uses half grades and distinguishes a standard CGC 10 (Gem Mint) from the higher CGC 10 Pristine / "Perfect 10." A standard CGC 10 is roughly comparable in strictness to a PSA 9.5-level card, and PSA 10s generally still sell for more on the open market.

Which grader has the strictest standards?

Strictness varies by era and card type, and all three are tough at the top grade. PSA 10 is famously hard to earn on Pokémon holos due to centering and surface. BGS is exacting because a Black Label requires four perfect sub-grades. CGC is well-regarded but often perceived as slightly more attainable at the top tier.

Which grader gives the best resale value for Pokémon?

PSA generally yields the strongest resale premium for Pokémon cards due to the broadest buyer recognition. A top BGS or CGC grade on a desirable card can also sell well — especially BGS Black Label on modern chase cards — but PSA is the safest default for resale.

What is a BGS Black Label?

A BGS Black Label is a BGS 10 with perfect 10 sub-grades across all four categories — centering, corners, edges, and surface. It is rare and commands a significant premium over a standard BGS 9.5 or 10, particularly on modern cards.

Should beginners use PSA, CGC, or BGS?

Beginners grading mid-value cards often get the best balance from CGC (lower cost, faster turnaround) while learning. If the card is a key you intend to resell, PSA is the safer choice for maximum buyer recognition. Reserve BGS for high-grade modern cards where sub-grades add value.
